(don't catholics embrace theistic evolution)
at least austrian arch-bishop schönborn openly supports creationism.
this is really unbelievable. i mean, it's kinda positive to see them open up a bit and go more mainstream. but i wonder if this is an initiative of local jehovah's witnesses or if it's supported by the branch.

there are exhibitions, discussions and other things happening.

"Sister," (or Brother) "May I have a word.....?"
by Lady Zombie insince i'm still getting to know all of you, tell me about an incident when you were pulled aside and counseled.
not having a formal jc meeting, but just an instance when some elder took it upon himself to "adjust" your thinking (or behavior).. here's one of mine.
it still is infuriating to me two years later.. there was a sister who had three young daughters (4 to 9 years) and a husband, all in the org.

i once told some elders that they were "building a fence around the law" (like they say the pharisees did). mostly because of highly personal things like dressing/grooming, hairstyle, beard etc.
in one of the next meetings an elder put me aside and told me "if you don't keep your mouth shut, we might well build a fence around YOU". -

You leave the Borg., your spouse stays in. Does marriage become hell?
by Hiddenwindow infor those of you with such experience, how difficult was your marital life after you left the wt?

you have to walk through a little hell when you "confess" to her. which mostly depends on the fact, that everybody in the congregation will ask her things about you and she'll feel bad. you have to understand that and not push it too hard in the beginning.
after that she'll eventually get used to it and life will be much better than before. due to the brothers talking $hit, she'll also eventually stop going to the meetings.
well, that was my experience. if she loves the religion more than you... i can't tell. -

Anyone ever been to Budapest?
by faundy ini'm going on monday for 8 days, have never even been on a plane before!.
em and i are really excited, but neither of us have been, so just wondered if anyone here has and can recommend any nice places, or warn of places to stay away from?
we have some guides, but they don't always give a personal view.. .

budapest is great. i don't know the names of all the places, but you should definately visit the castle on the mountain, the thermal baths and if you are into medieval stuff, i'd recommend a visit in "sir lancelot", they have great food and funny shows including bellydancing and firespitting.
depending on your interests, there's also a "house of horrors" which i believe was the nazi headquaters in budapest. and there's the communist statue park.
you could also get a guide, they don't charge that much and show you everything. -

Do JWs really believe the end is near?
by keyser soze inor do they merely pay lip service to the idea?
i have no doubt that some of them sincerely believe.
but when i was a kid, growing up in the '80s, i didn't know of a single witness, myself included, who didn't believe the end was close.

I realized that the end could mathematically be close, and getting closer, and still not ever come
i like that thought: "the everlasting last days". -

Makes me wonder if this book study change was a snap decision by the GB.
likely more of a "schnapps decision", like everything else they come up with. -

Just one shred of evidence?
by nvrgnbk inis there just one shred of evidence that proves beyond any doubt that there is a being that is responsible for the existence of the universe and that it continues to have some effect on its inhabitants?
thanks for the inspiration, honesty.

"i want to believe, i really do".
i do not want to believe. if i got proof of something, i don't believe it, i know it.
now with unprovable things, there are at least probabilities. if there is much evidence for something without any evidence against it, it's probability is pretty high. if there's no evidence whatsoever for something, the probability is pretty low. this is like poker. i don't know the other's hand, but i know the possibilities.
the problem with the "are we created" question is, that if answered positively for whatever reason, it leaves one with even more unprovable questions. i don't even want to begin listing some of the questions, because it leads to nowhere.
simply put: "we are (most probably) not created" and "we are (maybe) created, so what" are not much of a difference when it comes to picking one's morals or way of life.
on the other hand "we are created, it's been one single personal god who spoke to people in the bronce-age, told them to write books that do not really make a superhuman impression, revised most of the stuff later by sending his son to earth and let him die as a virtual payment to himself for a sin he himself invented so everybody who believes this can live forever" sounds a little far-fetched, especially when the person believing this thinks, everone who replaces "sending his son" with "coming down himself" is a complete idiot and everyone who adds a character named "mohammed" to the whole story will be killed by his loving god. -

Did you find worldly people as bad as the JW's made them out to be??
by karter inas a jw we were always told worldly people were bad always out for what they could get out of you.
as for me iv'e made some good friends not anything as bad as the jw's said they woul'd be.
what about you ?????????

i once told an elder that i don't believe in "the world". it's nice for some people to have two big boxes (actually a little "JW"-box and a huge "world"-box) they can put everyone into.
of course there is no such thing as "the world" vs. "JWs", but the JW faith depends on that view. after all there's a war going on, and a war needs a big bad enemy to have enough supporters. -

Observations about dubs as people...
by Princess Daisy Boo ini was thinking back on some of the people i knew growing up, as well as my own family - many of whom are dubs... tell me what your own experiences are of these kind of people, did you notice a large prevalence of these types of people in the congs you attended:.
1. health nuts: into all sorts of alternative health theories like iridology, reflexology, homeopathy etc?
2. get rich quick folk: always getting involved in this scheme or that, this business or that - especially pyramid type things?.

another thing they were really into here is selling stuff from Vorwerk: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorwerk_%28company%29 (read the "trivia" part on the very bottom)
they'd go house to house selling vacuum cleaners, because, you know... it works pretty much the same as field service. i knew many many brothers who worked for that company.
and yeah, anything that has to be sold in a "party". was forced into one once, so boooring! almost like book-study.
